Simon J Woolf heeft onlangs aantal oranje wijnen uit Slovenië die wij hem hebben aangereikt namens de wijnmakers, waaronder bovenstaande, geproefd en beoordeeld:

This 12 month macerated gem is a consistent favourite of mine, from winemaker Matjaz Certrtic. The aromas are beguiling – the autumnal, stewed fruits are present (plums, apples) but with a sensation of sage and a feeling of freshness too. The palate grips you by the neck, with thrilling tartness and assertive but utterly well bred tannins in their posh Sunday clothes. Laser sharp and bone dry, yet the texture gives balance – this isn’t austere. Wonderful stuff.

Simon J Woolf: Ferdinand Brutus – ★★★★☆★ (4,5)

Thick skinned Rebula needs only 10 days of skin contact (as here) to create a seriously structured, complex wine. This standout vineyard selection from Borut Blazic is a textbook example of Brda/Collio Rebula – dense, slightly honeyed and full of twiggy underbrush and flavours – yet the pinsharp acids keep it wonderfully fresh and alive. Long ageing in barrel and bottle has really paid off too. Drinking wonderfully right now, but this could easily be put to the back of the cellar and kept for 5-10 years (if you have the patience).

Simon J Woolf: Blazič Rebula Selekcija – ★★★★☆★ (4,5)

With 12 months of skin contact for the Rebula (whole berries barrel fermented), this blend (50% Rebula, 50% Chardonnay) emerges impressively soft and accessible – very light extraction here. The nose is sage-dominated, and it’s crisp and nutty on the palate, with a nice nervy hint of Rebula’s high acids that doesn’t dominate. Tannins are very fine, and overall there’s a feeling of focus and definition. This is the best vintage of Kontra that I’ve yet tasted – chapeau!

Simon J Woolf: Ščurek – Kontra 2018 ★★★★ (4)

Proving that it really is the king of maceration – and the star variety in Brda – this five day macerated Rebula is easily the best from this rebooting producer (organic conversion in progress). I wish he’d pushed the maceration time a but further, yet at the same time the lightness and deftness is charming. Very delicate and herbal on the nose, with some lemon peel, hints of candied fruits (angelica) and fresh herbs. There’s also a very attractive chalky quality which knits together this admittedly lean yet super typical and thirst-quenching wine.
